Personal Branding Quick Tip

If you telecommute (even just part of the time), here are some ways you can create greater awareness of the value you contribute to the organization:

1. Communicate more frequently than you would if you were at the office. Don′t annoy people, but you need to constantly remind them you are there and doing important and valuable work. Provide regular progress reports, quick check-in calls, etc.

2. Improve your communications skills. Become excellent at writing clear and compelling emails. Learn how to use telephone communications efficiently. It′s harder to wow people when they can′t see your face or body language. As a telecommuter, you need to be an outstanding communicator.

3. Use instant messaging to stay connected throughout the day (but ensure you are following IM etiquette or you will risk annoying people)

4. If possible, use video conferencing/web cams whenever possible. People like to see your mug. Use web seminars wherever possible and ensure you have your headshot in the upper left corner of the screen.

5. Commit to being on-site for important meetings and events (telecommuting doesn′t mean never going into the office). Demonstrate your commitment. And when you are in the office, don′t lock yourself in the office. Be out there speaking with your colleagues, mangers and contacts.

6. Don′t let time zones get in the way. Make sure you are available during the office hours of your work even if you are physically in a different time zone. People need to know they can count on you.

7. Speak up during conference calls, always saying your name before saying what you have to say ‘This is Margaret, the point I would like to make….."

8. Build a powerful on-line identity. Your colleagues will google you to learn more about you (since they can′t ask you in person) so ensure you have stellar Google results (volume and relevance).

9. Find a way to add value to the business from your location, like meeting with local clients, heading the local chapter of a professional association, etc.

10. Increase your visibility outside your company. Sometimes the value you create externally makes you more valuable internally.
